How do you tell what material carpet is made of?

I'm just getting started, and I'm not sure how to tell carpet materials apart. Can you tell just by looking, or do you need to feel the carpet?

I'm focusing on residential to start, but I know someone who might be able to get me a few jobs with some local banks.
